The Sustainable Sciences Institute (SSI) is an international non-profit organization dedicated to developing scientific research capacity in areas with pressing health problems. At SSI, we believe that we can improve the human condition by the appropriate use of knowledge, science, and technology. Our work is based on the premise that global health relies on biomedical scientists and public health workers who can recognize and resolve infectious diseases at the local level. As such, we partners with promising researchers in developing countries, offering long term assistance and mentoring to help them excel in their fields of research and make a difference in the health of their communities. SSI is in a unique position to respond to the needs of these scientists and health professionals because we have built our mission of developing scientific research capacity in areas with public health problems around the understanding that they have the ability - and the responsibility - to confront and manage infectious diseases in their countries, but that they lack the necessary tools.
Since our inception in 1998, we have transferred knowledge and technology to local scientists in the developing world through a series of intensive in-country workshops, donations of much-needed laboratory supplies, and small grants for research projects. More specifically we have held over 37 training workshops, provided seed funds for over 33 research projects, send supplies to numerous countries, and have trained and supported more than one thousand scientists. We are world-renown for our pioneering work in scientific capacity-building in developing countries and are recognized as a model for technology transfer programs by global health agencies across the country and the world including the World Health Organization, the Pan American Health Organization, the Organization of American States, the US National Academy of Sciences, and the National Science Foundation.
